In every country where you drive, you are responsible for equipping and controlling your vehicle correctly. You may be liable to receive a penalty fine if you hinder the normal flow of traffic or cause an accident because your vehicle was not adapted to drive in that particular country’s weather and road conditions.
The law in some countries will require residents to drive with winter tyres at certain times of the year or when conditions make their use necessary. At other times, visitors are permitted to drive on 'summer' tyres, which have been fitted with snow chains under certain conditions or when local signs dictate.
Since the end of 2010, new German regulations came into force, which require all passenger cars and motorbikes, including vehicles from foreign countries to be fitted with winter tyres or all season tyres on all axles during winter conditions.

Legal minimum tyre tread depth A minimum tread depth of 3 mm is required in most countries. The exception is the Czech Republic, which now requires a minimum tread depth of 4 mm. For all other tyres (not winter tyres) the legal minimum is 1.6 mm For driving in winter conditions abroad, it is strongly recommended that all your tyres should have a MINIMUM of between 2 mm – 3 mm of tread depth.
